Common Pool Pump Problems

Pool pump is directly responsible for creating pressure in your pool. This pressure in return forces the water to flow right through the filter. What we are saying here is that without the pump your pool water cannot be purified and that is why in this context the pump is simply the heart of the swimming pool.
Due to one reason or the other, your pool might stop functioning making your pool a health hazard. This article looks problems that commonly affect your pool pump and possible solutions.
1.  Pump Water Suction Loss
  • When your pump is not moving water, first make sure the skimmer and the pump basket are emptied. Usually when they are full they restrict the flow of water.  A dirty filter can also restrict smooth flow of water. Pump impeller is another area that when clogged it affects smooth flow of the water. Impeller is the part of the pump that is connected to the motor that moves the water.
  • Air leaking in the suction line is another cause of suction loss. The suction line is where the pump gets supplied with the water from the pool. Remember the pump is purely meant to such water but if something is not right it is likely to such air.
 2. Water leaking from the pump
  • Bad impeller housing O ring or shaft seal, bad thread sealant or shrunken threads on the plumbing discharge pipe or the pipe that comes out of the pump. Bad O Ring and seal can be fixed by getting yourself a Go Kit which contains seals and O ring in one kit. Occasionally replace your pump seals and you will never go wrong with Go kits in your store because the kit is cheaper than buying each seal individually.
3. Motor Refuses to start or Turns off after a short while
  • First check the power of the motor and the time breaker. If both are working perfectly then listen if the motor is humming or clicking. If the motor is humming that means that the capacitor is faulty. The capacity is the one that sets the motor spinning.  Capacitors are located at the back of the motor housing.
  •  When the motor turns off after sometime is means it is overheating. This happens when many people in the neighborhood are using electricity at the same time. Other reason might be that the fan is not working.
  4. Noisy Pump
  • This could be as a result of worn out bearings.  Bearings are mounted on the pool motor shaft inside the motor to help reduce the friction as the electro magnates make the motor shaft spin. Most motors have two different sizes in them and usually take special bearing pullers to remove them.
  5. Pump Sucking Air
  • Pool pumps are supposed to be air tight. Even though small air leaks are expected, when it gets out of control it becomes problematic and it affects water circulation. The most common causes of a pump air leak include bad thread sealant where the pipe enters the pump, leaking  valve stem on one of the suction valves or a break in the plumbing. Other sources of air leaking into the system include a loose or old pump lid or pump lid o-ring or an ill fitting pump drain plug. All air leaks originate before the impeller.
Equipped with the above information, you can easily diagnose most of the problems associated with swimming pool pumps.

Pool Pumps And Motors  : The most important equipment of swimming pool system is pool pumps and motors. These pool pumps and motors are required to maintain the cleanliness of the pool water.
